The Gaelic Sports Club of Luxembourg (GSCL) has been in existence for just over 30 years. To mark the occasion, the Club has published a richly illustrated book telling the story of the past three decades. A glance through it shows how closely integrated the GSCL has been with Comhaltas in Luxembourg. Over the three decades, both organisations have visited many places of Irish interest across the Continent and have presented displays of Irish music, song and dance - as well as of hurling and football.Aptly named "More than a Sporting Experience", this elegant book tells us a great deal about places of Irish interest on the Continent with some 32 pages of colour photos and scores of pictures in black and white. Scenes from Arras and Haguenau, Rome and Paris with emphasis on places associated over the centuries with Ireland. The Wild Geese story is linked with the present-day Irish in both our organisations. There are pictures of many documents of great historical significance - e.g. the Cambrai manuscript and the letter of the Marquis de Lostanges to Colonel Warren; scenes from matches and also Comhaltas presentations such as that in the hall where the Treaty of Amiens was signed... There is an excellent introduction by the Mayor of Luxembourg City and a witty piece by Barry Desmond. Significantly, the Luxembourg Irish are the first community from our country on the continent to publish a book on our activities. At 15 euros payable to LU24 0021 1375 5690 0000, this is great value and a must for all friends of Ireland and would make an ideal Christmas gift.
